There can scarcely be any doubt that 1989 is equal to 1789 in its world historic dimensions. Cynics and sophisticates alike recognize that the ubiquitous "people" have spoken. Not a day passes without another startling revelation cracking the mythology of the communist past, or another mass demonstration of disaffection, with the communist present. But what exactly links ail of these events, and, further, what, unites the revolutionary upheavals in every single country from Central Europe to East Asia, in spirit if not in exact. consequences, deserves consideration.
