ABSTRACT
Government sympathizers now took the initiative in demanding a final coup de grace against the guerrillas at Sierra Maestra. It was clear that it was the government’s turn to act, for its forces were showing signs of recovering their battered morale; the people had been impressed by the regime’s ability to crush the strike in the cities; and the urban underground appeared to have foundered under the wave of repression that followed the strike.
