The system of Disposal is modified in a number of respects when it is applied to young offenders. Most of the formal modifications are limited to juveniles: but deals with young adults. In Scotland, although legislation allowed juvenile courts to be set up, this was, in fact, done in only four areas; elsewhere ordinary courts of summary jurisdiction sat on special days as a juvenile court, and were governed by roughly the same safeguards and rules of procedure as an English juvenile court. The extent to which cautioning is used as a method of dealing with young offenders depends on the policy and instructions of each Chief Constable, and varies remarkably from one police area to another. The chapter deals with measures which can be applied by criminal courts as a result of prosecution.
