ABSTRACT

Personal character forges the second critical dimension of global leadership. As we discussed in Chapter 3, the world is too big and diverse to command and control. Getting 100,000 employees in 100 different countries all marching in the strategic direction is no easy feat. Yet, as Sun Tzu, the Chinese military leader and philosopher concluded, “he whose ranks are united in purpose will be victorious.” 1 How do global leaders get hordes of employees scattered across the globe united in purpose and direction? They achieve this not because they shout out orders from the top floor of corporate headquarters but because they have people’s goodwill and trust.
