ABSTRACT

Liam Stacey hit the headlines when he was sent to prison for posting racist tweets as footballer Fabrice Muamba lay fighting for his life on the pitch. This chapter begins by discussing the case and its public reaction. It goes on to examine a number of other cases in which footballers have either been racially abused on social media or got into trouble themselves for posting content. This leads to an analysis of how football authorities and campaign groups are dealing with the issue of racism on social media.
