ABSTRACT

How will history evaluate Wu Wen-Tsun’s dual turn to ‘mechanization’ and to traditional Chinese mathematics? Did he succeed in reinvigorating independent mathematical research, and thus help the Chinese nation? Or was it only a remarkable reinvigoration of his own career, without lasting consequences for Chinese mathematics as a whole? It is too early to answer these questions, and it would require a thorough assessment of current trends in Chinese mathematics, an exercise beyond the scope of this book and the competence of its author. In this final chapter, I shall instead summarize what the dual turn has brought to Wu Wen-Tsun personally, and discuss to what extent it is workable and acceptable as a model for the Chinese mathematical community.
