ABSTRACT

There are only few, weak and rather accidental connections between the concept and the activities of transformative learning on one hand and the public and formal school and education systems in the various countries on the other hand, apart from a few university courses, mainly in North America. For instance, in the book Transformative Learning in Practice (Mezirow & Taylor, et al. 2009) the great majority of examples are taken from university activities in the USA and Canada and a few other Western countries. And it is characteristic that the examples about ‘Workplace Education’ do not refer directly to activities at work but to working people participating in various courses, while in the part about ‘Community and Social Change’ there are examples from activities in some less industrialized countries, but these are managed by specialists from Western countries with university backgrounds.
