ABSTRACT
The other major force of change in the world is, of course, the incipient uprising of underdeveloped society against its millennia of penury and privation. Most of the countries of the Southern regions have thrown off the fetters of colonialism, only to find themselves confronted by insurmountable problems of economic development. For the political struggle of independence, these countries were better armed; leadership and political movements responded, more or less effectively, to the needs of the time. Here political ideas and support from the North have been helpful and frequently decisive. Most leaders of the independence movements were able to draw upon the history and strategies of social and political movements, both East and West, to fashion their campaigns. Since the last world war, modern society generally has supported the liberation movements, despite their own mutual antagonisms.
