ABSTRACT
The purpose of this chapter is to analyze the process of dehumanization to which the prisoners of the Nazi concentration camps, and Auschwitz in particular, were subjected. Examining different testimonial sources,2 I will attempt to answer two primary questions: How did the prisoners experience their loss of humanity, and what did “dignity” (and its loss) mean for the survivors? For the sake of convenience, I divide this process into three analytical categories that correspond to three chronological stages: 1) The First Stage: Exclusion-the years of persecution until deportation; 2) The Second Stage: Loss of Control-deportation, the journey in cattle cars to the camps, and the processing procedure; 3) The Third Stage: Nakedness and Deprivation-life as a prisoner in the camp.
