ABSTRACT

Many Egyptian, Arab and foreign friends have expressed interest in reading my story concerning Sadat’s decision to fly to Jerusalem on 19 November 1977. They argue that this was a major historical event and that, as Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of Egypt up to 17 November 1977, I was under special obligation to break the silence I had voluntarily imposed on myself. The story of what really happened between Sadat and myself prior to his final decision to go to Jerusalem has to be told. They continue to argue that, while it is true that Sadat’s visit was acclaimed world-wide, on the other hand there remain many major questions and serious doubts as to the wisdom of the initiative itself.
