ABSTRACT

In the year after the October War, significant change took place and much progress was made by Egypt. On the ground, we had at least succeeded in stabilising the ceasefire on both the Egyptian and the Syrian fronts. To be sure, this was still only a ceasefire and we remained a country at war. The issue of peace still had to be tackled, and it was bound to be a difficult one, because we were determined not to accept a separate treaty with Israel but to work for a comprehensive settlement in the entire area. However, we had also made significant progress in putting Egyptian foreign policy on a new track.
