ABSTRACT
William Petty was one of the very first people to think and write systematically about economics, and one of the first to apply economic analysis to real-world issues. His work provides insight into the nature of rent and taxation. But Petty is best known for attempting to make economics a quantitative and statistical science through what he called “political arithmetic.”
