ABSTRACT
Thorstein Veblen (pronounced VEB-LIN, the first syllable rhyming with web) was a sharp and witty critic of orthodox economic theory. His criticism, and his own positive contribution to economics, stressed the impact of social institutions on human behavior. Veblen saw people acting based on habits and customs, rather than individual self-interest. He also explained how these behavioral dispositions caused economies to evolve over time.
