ABSTRACT

Jan Tinbergen was a pioneer in the development of econometrics. He constructed the first statistical economic models; he then used these models to study business cycles and how economic policy affects national economies. But Tinbergen was not just a number-cruncher. As Baum (1989,p. 305) points out, his statistical work was driven by a “deep-seated concern for human welfare and a conviction that scientific, mathematical analysis can be combined with a broader humanistic approach.”
