ABSTRACT

Barbara Bergmann has been a pioneer in the development of feminist economics and alternative research methodologies. She spent her career studying labor markets, and examining how problems in labor markets can lead to unemployment and poverty, as well as what could be done to remedy these problems. She also examined why women receive such low wages. Bergmann identified discrimination, in particular excluding women from certain jobs, as a major cause of low wages for women and child poverty. To deal with these problems, she advocated a strong affirmative action program plus government provision of child care so that women could work and be productive members of society.
