ABSTRACT

Amartya Sen has made important contributions in the areas of welfare economics and economic development. He broadened the way 274economists view human well-being, so that it encompasses developing human potential as well as increasing individual consumption. He showed how poverty and underdevelopment adversely affect women. And he has argued that economists who study economic development and less-developed nations need to focus more on creating opportunities for people (especially women) and less on trying to increase economic growth.
