ABSTRACT

Hong Ying (born Chen Hong Ying) is one of China's most prolific and controversial women writers. Born in 1962, she belongs to a transitional generation of Chinese writers and intellectuals, like Chen Ran and Lin Bai (see Chapters 3 and 4) who were born and raised before and during the time of the Cultural Revolution (1966–76). Hong's autobiographical writings, novels and short stories express the nascent desires and impossible longings of her generation. She also announces some of the new trends in personalized writing that younger writers, born in the 1980s, advance in their works.
