ABSTRACT
In order to focus the discussion away from the wide ranging aspects related to the function of buildings, it would be convenient to narrow it down to the role of the building envelope. Just to illustrate how wide the topic could be, we only have to consider the following statement:
Our concept of what a building is, therefore, is more than what would be found in a dictionary definition of shelter. A building is, functionally, what we expect it to be.
