ABSTRACT

LA’ project, the Getty Conservation Institute sought fresh eyes on the city. Field

director Gavin Younge describes the approach he took in choosing the photogra-

phers:

More than ten years on, the 72 photographs in the exhibition catalogue

are themselves a landmark, a memory of the city in transition, legal segregation

recently abolished, the first democratic elections a recent event, the ink still wet

on the pages of South Africa’s new constitution. A selection of the work of three

of the contributors well captures the moment.
