ABSTRACT

Manenberg housing was built in the 1960s according to the fashion for neigh-

bourhood unit planning and in part response to the forced removals from inner-

city areas such as District Six. Photographer David Lurie’s ten images from

Manenberg Avenue form a detailed study of life in one of Cape Town’s poorest

parts. They present perhaps one ‘point of view’ from the main drag in the mod-

ernist planned dormitory ghetto of Manenberg.
