ABSTRACT
Food aid has long been inextricable from donors’ geopolitical, agricultural trade promotion and surplus disposal objectives. Many contemporary observers nonetheless appear surprisingly unaware of food aid’s origins and the constellation of interests that support and shape it in practice. In this chapter and the next, we explore the various donor objectives that have motivated food aid, as well as food aid’s efficacy in addressing those donor objectives that are distinct from recipient objectives for improved food security.
