ABSTRACT

I have devoted a separate chapter to deal more fully with ideology critique, because ideology critique is fundamental to professional judgement in that ideology itself is inescapable; all we can do is to choose what ideologies we wish to adopt. Further, as a procedure, ideology critique is extremely productive: I recently read a 30-page analysis of the text of a lapel badge (Frow 1983). Although it is probably necessary to say something about the concept of ideology here, there is such a vast amount of literature on the topic that I do not pretend to have achieved any kind of a full summary even of my limited reading. What I want to do is to introduce some of the main ideas about ideology, and to explain some of the key terms one fi nds in the literature. I shall illustrate each theoretical point with a concrete example.
