WE HAVE already said enough to suggest what a characteristic conflict is likely to be in Bethnal Green —the result of stressing the mother-daughter tie being that there is an inherent tension between the husband and his mother-in-law. Both mother and husband have claims on the loyalty and affections of the same person, and, if the marriage is to reach stability, they have to adjust these claims by coming to terms with each other.
