ABSTRACT
Adilemmaexistsinmostformsofadulteducation, particularlycontinuingprofessionaleducation,whichhas unfortunateconsequencesforresearchandprofessional formation.Inthelatter,forexample,thestatedrationaleis invariablypracticalintermsofhelpingthepractitionerby developingskillsandcapabilitiesandthusenhancingthe qualityofpractice.Yet,inthemain,contentemphasizes theoreticalknowledgewiththeresultthatthepracticalaim isnotrealized.Thatthisshouldhappensoconsistentlyis surprisingandinneedofexplanation.Tolocatethesource ofthedilemmawehavetoexaminetheeffectsofa particularconceptualizationofpracticeanditsimplications fortherelationshipbetweentheoryandpractice.
