ABSTRACT

Human beings are always in the process of becoming — of incorporating into their biographies current learning experiences and thus creating new, but social being. Being is, therefore, transitory; it is always a manifestation of the “now” in the process of becoming. Time does not stand still, and so the process of becoming continues for as long as there is life. Becoming implies not only a future but a potential — development into something more than what already exists. Words like being and becoming are relatively rare in the educational vocabulary because few existentialists have concerned themselves with education; growth and development are much more common concepts in this field. Being and becoming provide the focus of this chapter, as we consider the subject of being a person.
