In addition to organizing departments to include revenue-earning activities, universities in the future are likely to be encouraged to insist on receiving a greater share than they currently do of individual

consultancy fees. At present university teachers are viewed ostensibly as full-time employees of their institution although many as a way of making ends meet take on consultancy work. The pattern of the future is likely to be a sharing of these proceeds or release time arrangements of a type that are common in other parts of the world, and would meet the needs of both the institution and the individual staff member.
