ABSTRACT

The warm-up has become an established part of athletes’ preparation for both competition and training. Warm-up protocols vary widely; however, in most intermittent sports the warm-up will tend to comprise an element of low- to moderate-intensity running activity combined with some form of stretching. The stated purposes of the warm-up process are typically:

to elevate heart rate and breathing rate;

to raise muscle and core temperature; and

to increase flexibility of muscles and joints.
