ABSTRACT

Mina is Michael’s friend in David Almond’s book Skellig. She does not cope well with school routines and requirements, but she has an extraordinary imagination and this is evident in the hugely original and insightful writing in her journal. ‘Words should wander and meander. They should fly like owls and flicker like bats and slip like cats. They should murmur or scream or sing.’ The typography in the book varies to enhance the meaning, and so we have print that gives the impression of handwriting and which varies at times in size and print strength.
