ABSTRACT

A US specialist in cognition and education, she has published a number of books and journal articles on learning to read, including Beginning to Read: Thinking and Learning about Print (Cambridge, Mass.: MIT Press, 1990, 1994). Adams makes a clear distinction between graphic and phonic cue-systems in learning to read. She is often cited to support phonic approaches, but she believes reading skills should be situated in a programme of good quality and interesting reading materials.
