ABSTRACT
The depression in California turned Dorothea Lange from a society portraitist into a documentary photographer. It did something of the same for John Steinbeck, moving him on from the genial local color of Tortilla Flat (1935) to a kind of documentary naturalism focusing on the desperate struggle between California’s big farm owners and the migrant labor needed to harvest their crops.
