ABSTRACT

Editor’s introduction This case study documents how Deansfield Community School has looked to their neighbourhood as a resource for creative learning and a ‘real world’ context that will generate relevance and meaning for its pupils. In looking outwards young people encounter and work with adults from different professions and roles, so widening their understanding of the world and life beyond school. The example here looks at young people as researchers and consultants on a controversial housing scheme and raises ethical questions about the right role for young people in this process. The elements of their challenge can be characterised as:

„ the pressure to raise attainment and meet pupil progress targets; „ the need to find the hooks and triggers to excite children in Key Stage 3; „ a desire to create ‘authentic learning’ models; „ the focus on developing individual and team skills as much as knowledge.
