ABSTRACT

Mathematics probably more than any other subject is cumulative, with one concept building onto a previous one, so it is essential to recognise children's mathematical ability and also any difficulties. The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) assessment of individual children enables teachers to see a clear profile of a child's problems. Early identification of difficulties may prevent confidence being lost or fear of mathematics developing. It is usually a parent or class teacher, or probably both, who spot specific learning difficulties in numeracy. A teacher is able to see by close observation where children at risk are struggling: perhaps when they are playing, using mathematical equipment, counting or taking part in informal discussions in maths lessons.
