ABSTRACT

Algebra allows generalisations to be made in maths by using letters to represent numbers, and for this reason understanding the topic is important. However, it is one of the most difficult aspects of abstract mathematics, which is often found irrelevant by many students and hated by many others. Indeed, their intense dislike may colour their attitude towards everything connected to maths. The fact that numbers and letters are used together creates a huge learning step to climb, exacerbating difficulties for both dyslexic and dyscalculic students experiencing problems with symbols.
