The concept of diversity management (DM), popularized in the USA in the 1990s, is increasingly promoted as a strategic people management technique that will enhance organizational competitiveness (Cooke 2011a ). Some US-owned MNCs also roll out their domestic-designed DM programmes to their global operations (Nishii and Özbigin 2007 ). This is in spite of the fact that the utility of DM as a US-originated concept in other societal contexts has been questioned by some researchers (e.g. Agocs and Burr 1996 ; Ferner et al. 2005 ; Healy and Oikelome 2007 ; Nishii and Özbilgin 2007 ). The intention of promoting DM in global operations is to address the talent shortage problem and to enhance employees’ engagement by accommodating the diverse needs of individuals and social groups (Cooke 2011c ).
