Mediators of Widowers’ Grief book
Many different factors can media te the ber eaved person’s grief experience.
While keeping track of the wide v ariety of mediators and their v arying inf u-
ence on grief can be daunting, it is cr itical that psychotherapists keep them in
mind throughout therapy. In this chapter I will describe the factors or mediators
that inf uence widowers’ grief reactions as well as an examination of the course
and length of g rief. The mediating factors can be g rouped into f ve categories:
(1) factors associated with the relationship to the deceased, (2) characteristics of
the widower, (3) characteristics of the loss, (4) social factors, and (5) concurrent
stressors. My categorization of these factors builds from Worden’s (2009) model
and is also informed by Parkes (1996) and Rando (1993), but is unique in that it
relates them specif cally to widowers.
