ABSTRACT
Besides the need to be appreciated as an individual person, another common and salient feature emerged from the entire sample of life story narratives, namely, the expression of a strong wish to be of use to others. Although not everyone felt they were at present in a position in which this was possible, positive experiences of having been useful at some point were mentioned across generations.
