ABSTRACT

Stalking has been referred to as a form of interpersonal terrorism, as a form of violence, as a form of predation, and as a “nightmare.” Such terminology suggests that stalking and unwanted pursuit inflict significant trauma on its victims. This chapter examines the various effects that stalking and unwanted pursuit and intrusion can have on the objects of such harassment. In order to explicate these effects, a typology of stalking symptoms or effects is developed. After reviewing the typology, we examine in greater detail the particularly severe consequences of stalking—threats and violence.
