ABSTRACT

A Single Bodilyorgan may serve several different functions in an animal supplied with a central nervous system capable of arousing the organ to action in different ways and in different combinations with other organs. For example, during ordinary breathing the muscles of the human respiratory system by their contraction supply the body with oxygen, while these same muscles serve a wholly different purpose when they are used to furnish the air necessary in producing vocal sounds. An animal’s teeth are used in masticating food. They may also be used in combating enemies. No one can contemplate the manifold activities of the human hand without realizing the wide range of behavior of which that organ is capable when controlled by a highly organized central nervous system.
