ABSTRACT

In a series of research studies, the Computer as Learning Partner project has transformed middle school instruction in thermodynamics by incorporating new technologies and refining instruction based on evidence from student work. The curriculum addressed direction of heat flow, heat, temperature, insulation, conduction, thermal equilibrium, and related topics appropriate for middle school. During most of the studies reported here, Eylon was an adviser to the project. The research on thermodynamics has been carried out over a 20-year period and is described in a series of papers and books (Lewis & Linn, 1994; Linn, 1995; Linn & Hsi, 2000; Linn, Davis, & Bell, 2004; Linn, Songer, & Eylon, 1996; Slotta & Linn, 2009).
