ABSTRACT
Pound and his wife spent the winter of 1914–15 with Yeats at Coleman's Hatch. In January, while following up material he had found among the Fenollosa papers, Pound began to read Confucius, probably Pauthier's French translation of the ‘Tschoung-Young’. His mother and father had been interested for years in the work of some of the Christian missionaries in China and he had read a little Confucius as early as July 1907; he had also had some contact with Chinese thought through Upward; but now, in his enthusiasm for Fenollosa, he began to pursue the matter more seriously.
