The Social Psychology of the School book
Whilst the psychological development of children in primitive society may be fairly clearly linked with the social customs of the tribe, the position is not so clear in societies such as our own. Here there are so many influences at work that it is impossible to consider any one of them to be the major factor in determining how children will develop psychologically. The school, however, will be a major factor for most children, since the school is society's expression of the deliberate attempt to transmit its culture in a systematic way and as effectively as possible. The environment which the school provides will naturally itself be socially determined, nevertheless it is possible to consider what conditions within the schools are likely to provide the best environment for the upbringing of the children.
