Mammals are capable of the most complex patterns of conditional reflexes. In a comparison of learning in animals of different order of complexity, the following pattern was found. When a choice between a triangle and a circle is presented and approach to the triangle is rewarded, fish, mice, pigeons, cats, dogs, and primates solve the problem. When circles and triangles are presented in sets of three and the odd one rewarded, the solution is not readily learned by any animals other than the primates.
