ABSTRACT

Eight years ago, my husband and I became foster carers, and the subject of attachment disorder became a part of our daily lives with the children in our care. In the simplest terms, babies who have their emotional and physical needs met by a caring parent will develop an attachment to that parent. They will then go on to make other attachments and eventually form good relationships as children and adults. The problems arise when a baby’s needs are not responded to effectively, consistently or sympathetically. These babies will develop an attachment disorder that can affect them in numerous ways. For example, they may not be able to express needs and emotions in appropriate ways, make friends, trust adults, or relax and become absorbed in activities.
