ABSTRACT
Ventilatory support usually necessitates insertion of endotracheal tubes (ETTs) or formation of a tracheostomy. ICU nurses caring for intubated patients are therefore responsible for ensuring patency of, and minimising complications from, artificial airways. This chapter describes types of tubes usually used in ICUs, the main complications of intubation and controversies surrounding endotracheal suction.
