ABSTRACT

Infection and its prevention have been the focus of much media and political attention in recent years. Infection often causes hospital admission, and can cause morbidity and mortality. Mutation of organisms into multi-resistant strains has escalated in the last decade (Larson et al., 2010). Critically ill patients are immunocompromised, so more susceptible to infection. Many studies, reviews and policies have recently been published, such as Saving Lives (DH, 2007a). Some changes in practices should reduce incidence, but solutions often remain elusive.
