ABSTRACT
Cardiovascular disease (including strokes) remains the single main cause of death in western societies (Pottle, 2007). In cardiothoracic ICUs, interventions for coronary artery disease are usually the reason for admission (discussed further in Chapter 30). In general ICUs, coronary artery disease more often complicates other pathologies that have necessitated admission.
