ABSTRACT
Inotropes are frequently used to maintain adequate blood pressure in critically ill patients. Inotropes (inos = ‘fibre’ in Greek) alter stretch of cardiac and arteriole muscle fibres. Vasopressors (also called ‘vasoconstrictors’) stimulate vasoconstriction. These effects are mediated through stimulation of the sympathetic nervous system.
