ABSTRACT

Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a largely predictable and preventable complication of hypotension (Davenport and Stevens, 2008; NCEPOD, 2009). Insufficient perfusion of the kidney causes both ischaemia of kidney tissue and oliguria. Ischaemia causes:

n inflammation

and may progress to

n necrosis – especially acute tubular necrosis (ATN).
