ABSTRACT

Another meaning of the term character, much closer to the one we are developing in this chapter, has to do with a person who exercises a degree of individuality. People remark, 'He's a real character', when the person in question stands out from the crowd, does not conform to expected protocols, draws attention by exaggerated gestures to unusual qualities he possesses. Usually such statements convey either a certain disapproval of the 'character's' flaunting of social traditions, or a certain envy of the 'character's' spirited disregard for unnecessary formalities.
