ABSTRACT

In this chapter we bring together the results of the work that is described later in Book 2. The conclusions of the individual sections are taken from there, and considered here as a whole. In this way we can answer a number of questions: how much has been spent on education since 1920 at current prices and in real terms? What is the division between wages and salaries, goods and services, and transfer payments ? How far have the component parts of education changed as proportions of the total ? How far has this varied from year to year as a proportion of the national income? Can we divide expenditure among social classes? And, lastly, what of the future?
